Industry already knows that the Flood & Water Management Act National Standards will be making reference to surface water run off quality when they are finally published, and that the updated SuDS Manual is also likely to highlight the use of proprietary and hybrid systems as part of the treatment train philosophy.

Perhaps what is less understood however, is that there are a number of treatment solutions already available with a proven track record of use throughout Europe. In addition some of these systems have undertaken robust performance testing and have been approved by the German DIBt organisation.

Regardless of the timing of the implementation of Schedule 3 there is still a need to comply with the requirements of the Water Framework Directive, and therefore developers and engineers need to be working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure any surface water leaving the development site meets the necessary requirements.

D-Rainclean bio-remediation porous channel system and the highly innovative Re-Medi8 engineered filter media, are two such systems that have proven performance to remove sub 63µ sediment particle and heavy metals, and importantly with very low maintenance intervals (up to 20 years). The systems can be incorporated into new build or can be retrofitted into existing SuDS schemes where runoff quality is an ongoing issue.
